Pelikan ink?

Posted by Madmosher666 on 02/04/10

Hi guys and gals after hearing such a lot of positive feedback about Pelikan ink i was goin to give it a try. Any tips from those that already use it? What it's best for? What it's not good for? Thanks for any replies.

can you use trait out of the bottle. I hear about double boiling. is that just to make it better for solid black or if you use it for gray wash is it ready to go right away.

Apparently the late great Jason Saga used to use it with boiled water for shading cus he said he got smoother greys that way. I'm thinking of doin my own premade shades using Pelikan, distilled water and alcohol. I really like the consistent shades of premade shades but don't like the ones i've tried including Classic colours and Silverback. What's your opinions on this recipe guys?

Don't line with a different pigment (eg talens) and shade off the line with pelikan, I've seen a noticable difference between the two, talens seems darker. If I use pelikan I use it for the whole tattoo.

Thanks for the replies guys. I line with either One or Lining Black from Eternal. I was mainly thinking of using it to shade with, i've liked the tone of it on pieces i've seen. I've found Silverback too light even the number 4 shade.

I used Pelikan for many Years as a grey just mix it with dest. water. For a Deeeep Black I mixed it with 5 % Pelikan Ultramarine Blue: makes it blacker for the eye, then (double!!!) boiled slowly very slowly we talk about 3-4 Days down 1/2 or even almost to a1/3 then mix in 10% Talens and you have a killer Black
For me the Pigment from Pelikan is just perfect ......
yeah the old Days.

You have to now that Pelikan and Talens use Phenol as a Preservativ. 15-20 Years ago it was even worse with Formaldehyd
and Tales was tested positive on Nitrosamine.

So I stopped using it, also it is banned by health Goverment.

As far as i am aware they only sell it in 1oz inkwells now. I dont know about the formulation. I wouldint buy the inkwells, aside from not knowing if they changed the formula ( which was questionably safe to begin with) its about 4 times more expensive now.

Are you going to buy the inkwells ? If your willing to pay that price there are definatly many other options, while pelikan is awesome for greywash, so are others.

Good luck finding a supplyer that sells it..im pretty sure it no longer exists, that includes all the art supply, writing supply and all other random misc sources, let me know if you find some. As for double boiling, i would still do it even for greywash, dont have to cook it down too much.
