ciferri pinch vise

Posted by Tender G on 12/08/10

I keep having problems with my ciferri linear pinch vise, it is to tight compare to my other machines. I have had two different kind of disposables stuck on my pinch vise that I struggle hell to get it out. What solutions do you guys have to fix this problem? I am leaning towards getting a rough sand paper and thickening the hole. Is that a good idea?

just widen the hole by putting something inbetween the vise, and use the allen bolt or thumbscrew to push the two sides apart. I dont think you would have good luck with the sandpaper.

what disposables are you using? a lot of them are over sized and do not fit well

I had the same problem with other machines i have and i got my dremmel tool and took out a little bit of material until it had a better fit. if you choose to do this remember to do it a little at a time and keep testing it until you are satisfied with the fit.

I am was using some old mithra disposables but those always get stuck on most of my machine they rally suck. But I have never had a problem with my vortex wrath disposables on any of may machine accept for this ciferri classic linear.

my mithra tubes have to be pretty squeezed into alll my machines but i really dont let it bother me enough to start messing with any of them. if you start off filling or dremmeling a little material off there not always gonna be perfect, its really easy to take off to much,. and it will make shit alot harder when you switch to a smaller tube. youll have to really turn the shit out of the tightening bolt. to me thats much more of a hassle then just squeezing a disposable in tightly. my recomendation , let it be...

Well the two times that got stuck in the vise actually broke in half. So i had to get some vise grips to pull it out but it was hard since every time i had a grip on the remainder part of the tube it snapped off. So it just remained a small piece of the disposable tube in the pinch vise, that is when I had to pull out my pocket knife and cut it in half inside the vise. Which I almost got off my fingers in accident by the way. I am going to try that dremmel tool idea, that should fix my problem. thanks for the input

as soloman mentioned , take an old back spring in between the split vice and use a screw to spread the vice apart some .
steer from the dremel idea , as if you take too much away from one side or the other your tube may have a slight angle which will affect the perfect allignment from your a bar / needle bar ...

What soloman and hooligan said. I did this to 2 of my workhorse machines, and it works like a charm! Easy, and effective, not to mention genius!

im sorry i didnt xplain myself more. I thought that it was common knowledge to what I was referring too. To remove material from the inside of your vice to make the tube slide in better is seriously like driving your car into the head of a nail to bang it into a wall. Its waaayy overkill. Like the post above me said, just slide a rear spring into the slit thats made by teh two halves of the pinch vice. then you screw your thumbscrew or allen bolt into the side with the threads, as it screws in, it will run into the peice of metal you have inbetween the vice and will force the hole open bigger. It takes so little effort to do and will preserve the machine.

Thank you! Just tried it and worked like a charm. What a great, simple trick. It's so annoying once in a while to have to saw a broken tube out. I read on a forum somewhere that a ring opener would work. With frames I've whacked a center punch into the hole to spread it a little.

Holy shit it worked! You surely kick ass, now my question is this. Would this change stay on my vise or should I do this like once every time I have a hard time installing my disposable? If I do have to do this every time to install disposable I really wouldn't mind, im just curious if its going to be that way.

Tender, it should keep you good for a few weeks. I know that with the flex of disposables, it can be easy to over-tighten the vise. Be careful not to do so , and it will help keep it straight. I use SS only, but have had to do the same thing to my workhorses, different diameter tubes = Argh!

your problem is simple... metric/imperial... most plastic tubes are 8mm which is a fraction bigger then 5/16... if you get the dremel out you cant garantee you will grind it even... the tool for the job is an 8mm hand reamer...try ebay
