Posted by Ton on 11/18/10

I need to purchase a new linear, but i am hesitating which materiel should I go to. Steel or Iron, I prefer the one that causes less vibration which ones would ya think would be best?

I used to say brass, but everything I've seen since using fk has flipped that on its ear. To be able to use an aluminum machine that seems to vibrate no more or less than my steel one is pretty amazing. I don't know if its the coils or geometry or whatever. Between iron and steel though, if that's what you're set on, I think iron being heavier and softer than steel would soak up the vibration better. All I know for sure is that the more I think I know about machines, the more I have to figure out. A year ago I thought ANY aluminum machine sucked, bottom line, now I love them. Well, fallen kings anyways.

I agree that brass is probably the better option but needs a yoke. Some say iron is the best of all, no yoke needed, but suffers from molecule fatiuque and needs to be de-magnitised from time to time.

The fk aluminium is an alloy that is light, strong, not soft, and does not vibrate as much as some other aluminium alloys. Choices, choices.

usually id say iron, but lately my friend and i have been rebuilding some old spaulding frames made out of junky, bendable, malleable steel just with better parts, and theyre awesome. sorta been making me reevaluate everything.

so, i gotta agree with brian and stephen. i think no matter what it is as long as everything is balanced properly youre good to go.

still, my personal favorite kind of frame is a cut piece of ductile iron. i used to have reasons for it. but now due to everything i said above, its just purely because i "like" them.

HEY, the material that more assorbe the vibration is BRASS,
is a composition of COPPER + ZINC
