small sparking

Posted by travelingtom on 10/30/10

i am having an issue with my coloring machine, i cant get the contact point to quit sparking, its not bad, just a very small spark, just enough to make it run choppy. i put literally 6 different capacitors on it and they all spark, and i got them from eikon, so i know they aren't junk.is there any other reason that could cause a spark, my other daily driver is set up the exact same, gap, springs, etc...i even put the capacitors on it to see if they were bad, and no spark at all from it. the wiring should be good, because its not grounding out. it just runs choppy. its really pissing me off, its one of my daily drivers, and i have been fighting with it for a while. does spring tension have anything to do with it? my boss has a couple infinite irons, and they dont have a whole lot. any info would help a ton!!!

check out the contact screw, and to much compression may cause sparking
hope that helps

try letting it run for about 3-5 hours.

whenever i put a machine together i put a setup in it and let it run for a while. 9 times out of 10 when you go back to it a few hours later it won't arc anymore.

might be as simple as that, or not. but its worth a try.

Check the contact screw and make sure its hitting the spring flat or hitting it even. It may be the tension not to sure though but try moving the contact screw a little to get a better connection ¬ hope that will help you out

thanks for the help guys, i round my contact screw so it always has a good connection, but i have never heard of running it for a couple hours, maybe i should try that.i am going to buy some new capacitors just to make sure

every machine i buy gets ran for a few hrs to " break her in " kinda like rebuildin a motor and having to break it in , just seems to get everything " seated " per se`

I used to see this with bad coils , maybe they are wore out ? have you put a different set of coils perhaps from a machine that is not sparking ?

well have you try to change out the contact screw i had a old paco rollins shader machine with a brass contact screw it had all most the same issue but it was not the capacitor needed to be changed out so i put a sliver or copper contact screw and that solved issues .hope this could help also happy Halloween yall

That's a good point about the contact screw. I was just re-building one of my older brass danny fowler machines the other day for kicks (trying to get it to run like my FK, ha ha). Anyways, the silver contact screw it it was pretty chingered up so i put a brass one in and it was sparking. This was at like 6 volts, 40 duty, and wasn't doing it before. So I put the roughed up silver one back in, and no spark.

The siliconized brass is great , harder than copper softer than silver . I agree with the fella that mentioned using a different set of coils , but decent point regarding non-siliconized brass .

it could be the coils, but there pretty much new as well, maybe a couple months old. i put some vaseline on the contact and ran it for a while, and it seemed to help, i think the contact might have been a little rough from filing it, i dont know, time to get some better machines i guess

"harder than copper softer than silver "

i think you got that backwards.. copper is much harder then silver, just sayin. silver is a very soft metal.
