Aluminum?

Posted by Gabriel on 10/11/10

So I know of FK and next generation. but I´m wondering does any one know of any other aluminum or light weight machines worth mention?

Does aluminium vibrate more than iron, brass, copper?

@ gustav, yes it does.

Borg aluminim is around 5.7 oz and I asked them if they vibrate more than their iron machine, but did not get a direct answer. They referred me to their website instead.

Whatever you do I don't recommend buying an aluminum machine for a linear. All aluminum machines shake just a little, so getting a full detail control on your linings wont be easy. But they are great monsters for shading I personally have a next Gen aluminum shader and I use it every damn day.

I have a Zen and Proton FK they are all setup with softbar, they not only have almost no vibration they also sound quiet.

the material absorbe more the vibration is BRASS

NATIONAL, PAPILLON and JOE KAPLAN sale aluminum frame from many years

Papillon! I've used aluminum coastal swing gate machines and aluminum northeast shader both made by papillon and they are definitely quality stuff..been around for years and never had any problems with either..

I often wonder what the best material is to dampen vibration and this includes all materials, plastics, metals etc. Where are the experts on this and what is the conclusion?

Ductile iron as far as i know. Im sure there are some exotic alloys that out preform it tho. But as far as balance for all the qualities that are relevent to a tattoo machine frame, ductile iron is great, and tops vibration dampening.

He died from a brain tumor and I miss my Kiwi mate, the oracle from Christchurch who knew everything about chemicals, metallurgy and exotic plastics, injection moulding, and much more.

I know very little about this stuff and can't even buy lower than 1020 low carbon iron anywhere in Australia so gave machine building away years ago. Too frustrating for me, maybe not good at it.

I was under the impression that aluminum is in fact superior at dampening vibration than iron and that is a common misconception. You guys might wanna check that one out

There are also types of aluminum that is stronger than steel. When people hear the word aluminum. They are constantly associating it with foil. No no no.
I love the sound of my FKs.. Theyre not so much quieter than my steel machines but a different sound.

copy/paste

One of the most widely used high-strength aluminum alloys is alloy 6061 with T6 temper. Pound for pound, 6061-T6 is stronger than some steel alloys, but not as strong as others.

The fact is, for any given high-strength aluminum alloy, there are higher-strength steels that outperform aluminum in strength-to-weight.

Factors other than strength and weight eventually dictate which material is a better choice for a particular application.

Titanium actually has the highest strength to weight ratio...i would love to have a titanium machine but the reason you dont see them is because its difficult to machine.

I use an aluminum FK iron Pyro for most of my lining, and it works pretty sick, but it has a crazy amount of vibration and gets hot pretty fast. I will use a steel machine for larger liner needle groupings and does not get hot whatsoever, and I dont feel nearly as much vibration. I use disposable tubes for both as well.
