Can needles dull during a tattoo

Posted by coreypopp on 09/03/10

I just started using bugpins from Mithra and have really love them. Smoother color blending and my grey wash has never been better. But I recently started to notice that after about 3 hours of tattooing the ink wasn't going in as well. My machine numbers remained the same so I know I wasn't losing power, and I rinsed the tip out frequently thinking that build of ink was the issue. Maybe I'm crazy, but if any of you have noticed this with bugpins, I'd really like to know.

You are not imagining things dude , it is true that needles dull , someone else can probably elaborate more - I have noticed the same issue although I use standard taper #12's .

Actually its the opposite from my understanding, the skin hones the needles over time actually making them sharper. That could still lead to the ink not going in the skin as easyly. Or maybe its posable that you hit the ink cap without realizeing it ? bugpins are delicate.

I won't say that its impossible that hit the cap. I am a big stickler when it comes to that, I always change the needle no matter how it looks when that happens but it is possible it happened without noticing it. I am glad i'm not crazy and others have noticed it though. I'm ordering some of the sureglide tips from allaprima. I wonder if it will keep the needle from honing since it won't be metal on metal. I'll give it a shot.

Ive had this happen with liner needles too.

I understand that different parts of the body require less/more voltage, but I have noticed a decrease in saturation over a period of time.

I wonder if an accumulation of dead skin cells on or between the needles is an additional factor? IDK : (

skin cell debris and ink debris on tight liner needles seems to be a contributing factor to a dulling effect- good point

its a combination of alot of things, usually build up of ointment in the needle and tube tip, papertowel fibers blood. The biggest thing is the ink, it gets watered down and filled with blood and crap. clean the needles well a couple times an hour, pour fresh cap of black when you notice it going in real spotty out of nowhere, I promise that will take care of it.

the use of texture needles make this happen with more frequency.
a good ointment is very important too, chosse a thin one

I'll always lay out about 2-3 extra ink caps of the dominant color im using to ensure I'm using fresh ink and keeps me from having to deglove and get more ink. When I do solid black fills... I'll lay out 6 small caps oppossed to 1 large. Keep a squeeze bottle with alcohol handy and blast out the tip and needles. Push the a-bar down and give it a good squirt also..

I use the alcool aswell in a big cap to cleen my needles, I just dip in the cap with the machine on, and rinse with water afterwords. Its a nice way to keep the needles clean.

I think ink stained may have hit on a good point here. If you have this problem after three hours, it's most likely due to a dilution of your pigments by blood products, effectively making them washes. But it is really easy the 'ping' needles on a cap bottom, especially bugpins. I haven't noticed any dulling of needles during normal use though.
