cutback?

Posted by Ady UK on 02/12/10

hi guys, i'm wondering if you would mind helping me? i'm currently looking for 2 machines and everything else as i've been promised an apprentice position when my friend opens his new shop. now i've been looking all over and keep coming across the term 'cutback' could someone please tell me what exactly this means as the photos of the machines dont look any different to any other 'normal machines to my untrained (yet) eye. thanks alot guys. Nick- your unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To my limited understanding on the subject a cutback machine is more than just having shorter springs. If someone fitted shorter springs on a machine that was for colouring the frame geometry would be less than ideal to be used as a cutback. The term cutback to me refers to the frame being cut back to allow for the shorter springs and efficient angle of the contact screw. A good example of this is the frame difference between a Sharpz Micro-Dial and a T-Dial. I'm not an authority on machines however.

The timing spring is shorter, the contact is way lower than a traditionnal machine ....hopte that is a clear explenation....not sure my english is quite limitated ahahah

thanks alot for all the replys guys. i think i'm going to go for a conventional ,machine anyway, i've been reading all the old posts on here and found something written by one of the machine builders that says you should only use a cutback if you have a fast technique to suit. is this right? i'm sure speed will come with time but i am a complete novice and wont be hitting even fruit or pig skin until i've had some bbp training etc. i want to learn all there is to know about safe practice before i start putting ink down. i'm just going to buy the kit now while i have the money, cos i wont be earning while doing the apprenticeship. I'm rambling now, so Thank You again. Peace and Love. Ady

depend on what style of tattoo you are doing......for my part i used cutback for fast linning machine...with a so short timing spring the machine tend to be faster...so suit better for linning...but how you tune it will make it wht it is .....and yeah obviously it.s just a different frame geometry...you cut the back of the machine...ahahah
